Born to illiterate working-class parents in China’s western Sichuan province, Lily Tang Williams grew up experiencing extremely poor living conditions, food rationing, social chaos, and Communist indoctrination. Chairman Mao died when Lily was 12 and China began rebuilding its economy. In spite of the hardships she, her family and friends endured. Lily Tang Williams came to America in 1988.
